Documents for countries around the world
Every country sets its own rules for accepting Australian documents. Since 7 November 2023, for example, mainland China accepts an apostille instead of consular legalisation, while the United Arab Emirates still requires legalisation through its embassy.
- Apostille countries: including India, the Philippines, mainland China and most of Europe. The apostille from DFAT replaces embassy legalisation.
- Legalisation countries: countries outside the Convention need a DFAT authentication, then legalisation by their embassy or consulate in Australia, and sometimes by their foreign ministry.
- Translations: many countries require an official translation of an English document. Ask whether it must be done before or after notarisation.
- Documents in your language: we can witness your signature on a document written in another language, and record that it was signed in our presence.

DFAT does not advise on what other countries need, and an apostille does not guarantee acceptance. Ask the office overseas what it requires, and send us its instructions with your documents.

It depends on the country. Countries that are party to the Hague Apostille Convention accept an apostille from DFAT. Other countries need an authentication from DFAT and then legalisation by their embassy. The Hague Conference status table lists the countries that are party, and the office that asked for your document can confirm what it needs.
Usually, yes. We can witness your signature on a document in another language, and the notarial certificate will record that it was signed in our presence. We cannot confirm the accuracy of its contents or of a translation. Bring an interpreter if you are not comfortable in English or Polish.
Yes. We certify copies of passports, certificates and records from the originals, and witness declarations for immigration and citizenship applications made overseas.
No. Notarial appointments take place at our Frankston office only. Documents for use overseas must be signed in the notary’s presence, and a certified copy can only be made from the original document.
